Federal Plan for Vouchers Clears Senate: D.C. Students to Receive Aid for Private Schools
Hendrie, Caroline
Education Week, v23 n20 p1, 28 Jan 2004
This article reports on the final congressional approval given by the U.S. Senate to a school voucher initiative for the nation's capital. Supporters vowed to have the program up and running by fall, while opponents pledged to do their best to derail it. In a move billed as historic by proponents and disgraceful by critics, the Senate passed the $14 million program of private school vouchers as part of an omnibus spending bill that cleared the chamber on January 22 by a vote of 65-28. Under the bill, children from low-income families in the District of Columbia will be eligible for tuition aid of up to $7,500 to attend religious or secular private schools in the city.
