Making Meaning of School Transitions
McNelles, Laurie
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n163 p58-60 May-Jun 2005
Early learning teachers do a great deal to support school transitions for young children and for their parents. There are also systematic changes that might yield benefits in promoting a smooth entry into primary education. The transition to school is usually an exciting and memorable time for children and their families. This article discusses the social, cognitive, and emotional development that has occurred with children during their preschool years. The author also discusses the specific skills that have been identified by primary school teachers in Canada as contributing factors to successful transitions to school: (1) physical well-being; (2) language and cognitive skills; and (3) social and emotional development. These factors are vital in preparing young children for the challenges of formal education.
