Learning from Recurring Debates in Education: Teacher Education Students Explore Historical Case Studies
Murrow, Sonia E.
Educational Studies, v37 n2 p135-156 2005
The pedagogy of teacher education is an understudied area; this includes the teaching of educational history to education students. In this article I highlight the teaching of educational history and current issues in teacher education through the use of what I call historical and current case studies. I examine work done in a pilot study that makes visible the ways in which students develop historical perspectives on past and present issues in education. Although the pilot seminar cannot be considered more than an impressionistic sample, teaching it enabled me to discern the challenges and benefits that can accompany education students' engagement with historical and contemporary cases. After discussing the tested curriculum, I consider the implications of this project for teacher education curriculum and pedagogy (Contains 3 notes.)
