Once a Student Now a Mentor: Preparing to Be a Cooperating Teacher
Maltas, Carla Jo; McCarty-Clair, June
Music Educators Journal, v93 n2 p48 Nov 2006
Sponsoring a student teacher is a tremendous responsibility for a mentor. It is a vitally important time in the life of the prospective teacher, so the teacher needs to carefully consider all aspects of being a mentor. Preparing for a student teacher to come into the classroom is somewhat like preparing for a new family member: everyone must adjust. The university will send the teacher information about its expectations for the intern and dates for assuming classroom duties, but there is still much that the teacher must be aware of as he/she prepares for the new arrival. In this article, the authors presents steps on helping a student teacher make a smooth transition to a mentor's environment, as well as some suggestions on what the student teacher can do to prepare.
