Greening Wittig Reactions: Solvent-Free Synthesis of Ethyl Trans-Cinnamate and Trans-3-(9-Anthryl)-2-Propenoic Acid Ethyl Ester
Nguyen, Kim Chi; Weizman, Haim
Journal of Chemical Education, v84 n1 p119-121 Jan 2007
Green procedure is used to create solvent-free alternatives for conventional Wittig reactions, which are widely used to install a double bond in a highly selective manner. Solvent-free reactions reduce health and environmental risks and provide a basis for an inquiry-based discussion of the stereochemistry of the Wittig reaction and the factors influencing the chemical shifts of alkenyl protons.
