"Chew on This": An Interview with Charles Wilson
Curriculum Review, v46 n5 p14 Jan 2007
When the award-winning journalist Eric Schlosser's groundbreaking book "Fast Food Nation" was published for adults, many called for his insights and research to be shared with young readers. And, when "Fast Food Nation" gained popularity as a fictional, yet factual motion picture, the buzz continued. Children, after all, are the fast-food industry's largest market share. In "Chew on This" (Houghton Mifflin, May 10, 2006), Schlosser along with co-author, Charles Wilson, presents the fast-food industry to pre-teen readers. The book designed for ages 11 to 13 (in grades 6, 7, and 8) focuses on: (1) the mistreatment of animals in slaughterhouses and employees in restaurants; (2) the shocking effects too much fast food can have on growing bodies; and (3) the impact of the industry on schools, communities and the earth. In addition, the book provides some real life lessons in economics, politics, and health at a time when young readers are starting to question "why things are the way they are." This article presents a brief interview with author Charles Wilson about "Chew on This," a book Wilson indicates is built on the backbone of Schlosser's research in "Fast Food Nation," but combines stories of young people around the country and new research that both authors undertook. Following the interview, ideas from the authors for incorporating "Chew on This" at home and in the classroom--geared specifically toward kids--are presented.
