Assessing Classism in Academic Settings
Langhout, Regina Day; Rosselli, Francine; Feinstein, Jonathan
Review of Higher Education, v30 n2 p145-184 Win 2007
The research described in this paper creates a behaviorally based measure that defines theoretically distinct domains of classism, assesses base rates within a college context, and examines how social class, race, and gender are related to classism. Participants of the study were college students at Hilltop University. A web-based survey was used to assess student experiences at the university. The students were assessed in terms of classism, social class, race and gender, psychological and school-related outcomes, and social adjustment. In this study, the authors discuss the measure to assess classism in academe, then discuss base rates and their measurement. They discuss social class, race, and gender as they relate to the dimensions of classism and labeling. Finally, limitations, implications, and future directions are delineated.
