And the Winner Is...Everyone!
Futch, Lynn
Library Media Connection, v22 n4 p40, 42 Jan 2004
Many state standards require teaching students about award-winning books, which can be a daunting task considering the number of Caldecott Medal winners. This author, a library media specialist at Mill Creek Elementary in Statesboro, Georgia, describes an efficient, creative, and energizing strategy she devised that enabled her to teach the students about more than one book at a time. The project involved videotaping third graders' oral book reports and then showing these videos to first- and second-grade students. She found that these presentations had quite an impact on the younger children, who not only remembered the titles of these books, but could also tell her all about the Caldecott Medal. Students began to notice the books that had the medals on them, and were excited to check out these titles. She concludes that the presentations were a positive learning experience for all of the students, and proved that when students are involved in learning by teaching others, everyone wins.
