Making Empowerment and Collaboration Part of the Lives of Highly Qualified Team Teachers
Seed, Allen
Middle School Journal (J3), v37 n5 p40-44 May 2006
This article describes the meaning of empowerment and collaboration, how they can be instituted, and the benefits that can result from them. Empowerment of teachers is a necessary ingredient of school improvement. Administrators who empower teachers grant them "the autonomy to make decisions about curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment." In this article, the author presents principles that can be used as a foundation for collaboration, such as: (1) Responsibility and authority go hand in hand; (2) Children and adults learn best in trusting communities in which every person is both a learner and resource for learning; and (3) All adult members of the school staff care for the institution and community as a whole as well as their primary roles in it. Among other things, the author presents some problems in empowering teachers and fostering collaboration.
