Thematic Solutions Using Young Adult Literature to Increase Reading Comprehension
Adams, Jill; Bushman, John H.
Middle School Journal (J3), v37 n4 p25-29 Mar 2006
In this article, the authors discuss thematic solutions using young adult literature to increase reading comprehension. Here, they emphasize that prior knowledge plays a very important role in the reading process. As students read, they actively "construct meaning through the integration of existing and new knowledge and the flexible use of strategies to foster, monitor, regulate, and maintain comprehension." They point out that young adult literature relates directly to students' lives and allows them to connect with and enjoy what they read, giving them a better chance of becoming lifelong readers. The importance of providing students with the right materials, the appropriate environment, an effective organizational design, in order for them to become lifelong readers is also discussed.
