Supporting Students and Parents through a School-University Partnership
Allen, Laura Van Zandt; Migliore, Eleanor T.
Middle School Journal (J3), v36 n3 p17-23 Jan 2005
This article provides the details about the Parent Support Program (PSP), a program developed by the educators at Trinity University and Jackson Middle School in San Antonio to increase parent involvement while providing authentic experiences for preservice teachers and school psychology students. The PSP began with a teacher at Jackson Middle School who realized the need for a structured support program for students and families. This school-university collaborative addressed four goals: (1) To assist parents and teachers in making middle school a positive experience for students; (2) To allow preservice teachers to experience diverse methods of parent involvement in an authentic context; (3) To provide school psychology students the experience of working with parents and teachers in a school-setting solving real-life problems; and (4) To extend collaboration between the Professional Development School and the university to include family and community.
