Latest Job Benefit--Ongoing Learning: School System in Missouri Offers Professional Development for All Employees
Mayes, Elizabeth
Journal of Staff Development, v26 n3 p27-30 Sum 2005
Parkway School District in Chesterfield, Mo., creates a system in which all their employees have opportunities to experience ongoing professional learning. District leadership believes that all employees, whether or not they interact with students, contribute to the school district's success. The Parkway support staff development is building a framework that encourages employees to develop their skills for career progression and highlights the importance of developing employees as part of effective succession planning for the district. The support staff development program in Parkway is a work in progress and includes several essential building blocks in its foundation: (1) a middle management skills program; (2) survey; (3) clearly defined career paths; (4) a support staff professional development committee; and (5) support staff miniconferences.
