Across the globe, it is no secret to people involved with career and technical education (CTE) that the German apprenticeship system is looked upon as the "gold standard" of workforce development training. In this article, the author compares the responses of subject matter experts (SMEs) in Germany and the United States, two of the world's industrialized nations struggling to adapt to a seemingly ever-changing environment, to questions about career and technical education. The author focuses on topics regarding: the steps taken to ensure the effectiveness of academic teachers and CTE/VET teachers; gender equality; ethnic/racial diversity; the role of education system; career focus; and others. Each topics addresses significant contemporary issues impacting secondary and postsecondary CTE professionals.
