Hill-Clarke, Kantaylieniere; Robinson, Nicole R.
Young Children, v59 n5 p91-95 Sep 2004
In recent years, the need to develop new, effective teaching strategies to further children's literacy learning increased with urgency. National organizations, as well as state policy makers, have developed reading standards and initiatives to address young children's literacy needs. However, the range of children's reading styles is extensive and requires a variety of teaching strategies and techniques. Teachers are encouraged to implement new strategies to increase literacy learning opportunities for all students. Use of music is one effective vehicle for enhancing literacy instruction for young children. This article suggests musical activities that support early literacy development. Integrating music into daily activities allows teachers to meet the needs of students reading at varied levels. Here, the authors stress the importance of learning through music for it enhances literacy skills of creative expression, phonemic awareness, and creative writing.
