Walking Our Talk about Standards
Easton, Lois Brown
Phi Delta Kappan, v88 n5 p391-394 Jan 2007
In this article, the author argues that, if schools truly were based on standards, they would look much different than they do now. She describes the standards-based system of an experimental school in Colorado. Here, she discusses how students document their work in a variety of ways, such as: (1) various types of portfolios; (2) oral delivery; (3) written delivery; (4) combined oral and written delivery; and (5) others, such as finished art pieces, sketchbooks, journals, etc. She also emphasizes the use of rubrics as a way of making mastery of standards a viable concept. Among other things, she shares her views on graduating through seat time.
