Burney, DeAnna McKinnie
Negro Educational Review, The, v57 n1-2 p35-47 Spr-Sum 2006
Four-hundred and eight 14 to 19-year-old adolescents in grades 9 through 12 participated in this study. The Adolescent Anger Rating Scale was used to assess differences in expressed anger among participants. Specific styles of anger were measured: reactive, instrumental, and anger control. Results of this study suggest that males demonstrate higher levels of reactive and instrumental anger, while females show higher levels of anger control. Grade level differences were observed in adolescent anger patterns. Ninth grade adolescents evidenced higher levels of both reactive and instrumental anger when compared to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Higher rates of reactive and instrumental anger were reported for Multi-racial, Black, and White than for Hispanic and Asian racial groups. Higher rates of anger control were reported for Asian, White, and Multi-racial than the other groups. The following tables are appended: (1) Participating Schools; and (2) Descriptive Statistics.(Contains 6 tables.)
