A Good Teacher in Every Classroom: Preparing the Highly Qualified Teachers Our Children Deserve
Darling-Hammond, Linda, Ed.; Baratz-Snowden, Joan, Ed.
Educational Horizons, v85 n2 p111-132 Win 2007
This paper excerpts a report based on the National Academy of Education's "Preparing Teachers for a Changing World: What Teachers Should Learn and Be Able to Do," which summarizes research on learning, teaching, and teacher education. In this article, the authors discuss how teachers can prepare to become highly qualified and how they can acquire the necessary knowledge about teaching and learning. They also discuss some problems on enactment and complexity, as well as implications for teacher preparation. Among other things, they discuss pedagogies of teacher education, such as: (1) student teaching; (2) performance assessments and portfolios; (3) analyses of teaching and learning; (4) case methods; and (5) practitioner inquiry. (Contains 1 figure and 10 notes.)
