A Literacy Luncheon
McCarty, Diane
Teaching Pre K-8, v35 n3 p56-57 Nov-Dec 2004
In this article, the author, an associate professor at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, describes how her early childhood education class assisted in the development of the "Literacy Luncheon." As part of a class assignment, each student was required to create an "ABC" book that would fit into a unit of study they would create later in the course. Since all authors need audiences, it was decided that the best way to "test" their books would be to invite five-year-olds to listen and respond to them. On the day of the Literacy Luncheon, kindergartners from nearby Longfellow Elementary School arrived by bus with their bag lunches. Each of the students worked with a group of 24 kindergartners, and found that the children's spontaneous and enthusiastic responses to the books made the hours of hard work well worth it.
