Going beyond the Right Answer
Richardson, Kathy
Teaching Pre K-8, v34 n4 p52-53 Jan 2004
Math is about the relationship between numbers. Right answers are not the only thing to look for when examining students' work in mathematics. Looking at how children solve computation problems can give teachers insight into their thinking and help determine what math skills they already know and what they still need to learn. The author contends that, if children are going to be successful in the study of mathematics throughout their schooling, it is vital that the mathematics they learn be meaningful to them. This article presents methods teachers can use to determine their students' understanding of those relationships.
