Direct Enrollments at Twenty-two Colleges and Universities Test Society's Confidence

Chinese Education and Society, v38 n4 p70-76 Jul-Aug 2005
This article examines the direct admission process and the selection criteria set by the tertiary institutions in China. As the name suggests, "direct admissions" means that it is up to the institution to decide which students to enroll. Tertiary institutions also have the right to decide the number of admissions, and not all schools are able to make up the 5 percent quota. From the direct-admission policy that has already been released by schools, it appears that "morals, intellect, sport, and beauty" are the chief methods of evaluation, but to different degrees of detail or in addition to the schools' own unique selection criteria. For example, the view of personnel from the China University of Politics and Law is this: the student should show prominently government thinking, be outstanding in a particular discipline, hold new ideas, have literary and artistic talent, be good at sports, and follow the university rules. However, the question that most concerns the public about university admissions is whether they can be equal, fair, and open. For the past several years, there have been scandals concerning school recommendations, especially for gifted students, so that faith in schools was severely compromised, nevertheless a credible system should be gradually established after careful monitoring and study. This will be a positive effect on the long-term healthy development of direct admissions for tertiary institutions.
