Strategies for Teaching Children with Autism in Physical Education
Groft-Jones, Melissa; Block, Martin E.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n6 p25-28 Nov 2006
The purpose of this article is to summarize information presented in the prior articles into practical strategies physical educators can use when teaching children with autism. The authors divided the article into three areas: (1) structuring the environment; (2) accommodating communication challenges; and (3) preventing challenging behaviors. Some examples and suggestions are discussed in each area to help teachers in dealing with children with autism. It should be noted that each child with autism presents unique strengths and weaknesses, so not all these suggestions will be appropriate for all children with autism. The authors emphasize that the key is to learn as much as possible about children with autism from each child's IEP team. Teachers then, must be prepared to implement individually determined strategies to structure the environment, accommodate communication challenges, and prevent challenging behaviors.
