Positive Behavioral Support
MacDonald, Cathy; Jones, Kristen; Istone, Michaela
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n6 p20-24 Nov 2006
This article describes how moving away from traditional behavior management techniques and using Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) can be useful in obtaining desired behaviors from children with autism. PBS is used widely by special education teachers and has tremendous implications for physical education. Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) is a team approach to developing individualized interventions that meet students' unique needs and improve their overall quality of life. This approach focuses on preventing problem behaviors and teaching alternative behaviors through examining the student's unique needs. More specifically, the goals of PBS include assisting students to (a) form positive relationships with teachers, classmates, and community members and (b) develop appropriate communication skills, self-control skills, and social skills.
