Chapter 1: The Place of the New Information Technologies in the Life of Today's Adolescent
Russian Education and Society, v46 n6 p10-38 Jun 2004
In this chapter the authors attempt to sketch the general outlines of the characteristics typical of students' attitudes toward the new information technologies. They touch on the following three aspects: (1) The place of the computer in the structure of leisure time of today's adolescent; (2) The role played by the new information technologies in the overall structure of the adolescent subculture's information space; and (3) The characteristics of computer use in adolescence. The third aspect is further broken down into the following: acquaintance with the computer; when school students begin to use the computer on their own; the intensity of use; where they use it; and their knowledgeability about new computer technologies. This block of questions is linked directly to the overall characterization of "students' involvement" in the world of computer technology and their interest in it. In addition, the authors focus the main attention on aspects such as the developmental dynamics of computer use, gender differences, and the influence of social stratification factors on the possibilities of using a computer. The authors stipulate that a particular thrust of their analysis of the data is a comparison with the findings of sociological surveys of adolescents conducted in the early and mid-1990s. Furthermore, they also attempt to trace the dynamics of changes in the use of computers by school students during the 1990s. (Contains 4 tables and 12 figures.)
