WCD Promotes Inclusion and Access for People with Special Needs
Williams, John M.
Exceptional Parent, v36 n2 p59 Feb 2006
This brief article describes the Sixth Annual World Congress and Exposition on Disabilities (WCD), held December 1-3, 2005 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For three days, hundreds of people visited more than 150 exhibits, attended more than 80 work sessions on a wide range of special needs issues and were united in their goals to be educated and inspired. The WCD brought together people with special needs and their families, caregivers, policymakers on all levels of government, advocates and business leaders. These individuals were united in their efforts to open up America for the country's 56 million exceptional people and for future generations of people with special needs. Attendees looked at sports and recreational activities and learned about state-of-the-art assistive technology solutions that are improving lives. Employment was a central concern for many attendees, and those seeking employment visited the Disability Career Fair where they met people looking to hire exceptional people. On a scale of one through ten, attendees interviewed rated the expo between 8 and 8.5. While they were pleased with the content and the exhibits, those interviewed wanted to see more assistive technology products. Democratic Congressman John P. Murtha was the keynote speaker on Saturday at the WCD.
