Teaching Pre K-8, v37 n1 p54,56-58 Aug-Sep 2006
Members of Teaching K-8's staff describe their visit to Brigantine Elementary School in Brigantine, NJ, where they were introduced to so many outstanding educators and enthusiastic volunteers that they wondered whether this was the "perfect school." Acknowledging that the school has some flaws, the Teaching K-8 staff note that Brigantine Elementary School has won four New Jersey Best Practice Awards, the New Jersey Star School Award, and the "Pride in Who We Are" award from the New Jersey Department of Education, among other awards. It was also one of five schools in the state nominated in 2006 by the New Jersey Department of Education for the No Child Left Behind National Blue Ribbon School Award. This article describes how the school's emphasis on an integrated approach to "character education" is the core around which the school builds its curriculum leading to its success in obtaining high staff morale and student achievement.
