Where Is Everybody? Organizing Adults to Promote Child Engagement
Casey, Amy M.; McWilliam, R. A.
Young Exceptional Children, v8 n2 p2-10 2005
The authors describe a zone defense schedule (ZDS), a system for organizing the staff and environment of a preschool classroom. Specifically, it is used to organize the roles of adults in the classroom so that transitions between activities are easier for children and provides greater opportunity for teaching (both during the transition and because more time will be spent in activities), and a reduction in behavior problems. Two steps for constructing a ZDS using the existing classroom (time blocks and staff role assignment) are described. Tips for making ZDS work are given, including flexibility in time schedules and adult roles and ensuring that activities and materials are ready. The importance of the set-up role is stressed as a critical element of the ZDS. Data is presented throughout this article demonstrating that ZDS implementation has a positive impact on child engagement, and that uniqueness lies in its emphasis on engagement, achieved by assigning an adult to the set-up role during each routine, and making transitions easier for children.
