Resourcefulness Is More Crucial than Resources: An Interview with Greg Bowe
Twigg, Carol A.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v38 n1 p34-41 Jan-Feb 2006
This article presents an interview with Greg Bowe, a research fellow at the Center for Urban Education and Innovation in the College of Education at Florida International University (FIU) where he directed the Undergraduate Writing Program for seven years. Founded in 1972, FIU is a large public urban university in Miami. In this interview, Bowe talks about the steps he undertook to redesign the writing course at FIU. Bowe relates how excited he had been when the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) announced its Program in Course Redesign in 1998, because it resonated with the ideas he was working on when he arrived at FIU in the fall of 1998 as the Writing Program Administrator. He relates that the high failure rates in the writing classes at FIU at the time of his arrival was what prompted him to redesign the school's writing curriculum. He also relates that the most important lesson he learned during his redesign implementation was resources must be taken into consideration when one thinks about redesign. (Contains 6 resources.)
