Pull the Weeds Before You Plant the Flowers

Educators are drowning under the weight of initiative fatigue--attempting to use the same amount of time, money, and emotional energy to accomplish more and more objectives. Eventually, each initiative added to the pile creates a dramatic decline in organizational effectiveness. As such, principals need to help their teachers by lessening the initiative fatigue experienced by many teachers. This can be done by following the philosophy practiced by good gardeners otherwise known as the "weeding process." In this article, the author suggests three ideas in beginning the "weeding process": (1) using intergrade dialogue to find the essentials; (2) pruning away the small stuff; and (3) setting the standard for a "weed-free garden" by respecting teachers' time.
