The Obesity Epidemic: How Non-PE Teachers Can Improve the Health of Their Students
Yaussi, Sarah C.
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v79 n2 p105-108 Nov-Dec 2005
As the obesity epidemic gains a stronger foothold in today's society--as evidenced by the recently revamped U.S. dietary guidelines--it is clear that young people are not adequately educated on the necessity of physical activity and good nutrition in their daily lives. The reality is that these students' families are not adequately educating them about physical activity and proper nutrition, which in turn not only jeopardizes their physical health but also their academic potential. Consequently, the responsibility falls on teachers--all teachers, not just physical education teachers--to educate students about and encourage them to develop healthier lifestyles. In this article, the author provides strategies for non-physical education teachers to incorporate exercise and nutrition information into almost any subject area. The author also suggests that teachers need to accept the responsibility of teaching students about good health because that information could potentially save their students' lives by helping them avoid the hazards associated with obesity.
