A Graph Is Worth a Thousand Words? The Publication Rate of Graphs in the JCSD, 1999 to 2004
Walker, David
Journal of College Student Development, v46 n6 p689-698 Nov-Dec 2005
Graphing data and/or results from quantitative studies have been noted in the social sciences and the field of education as a means toward employing solid methodological practices. The publication rate in the JCSD of six specified graphs was examined under two editor ships from 1999 to 2003 and 2004. Preliminary results from the review suggested that a publication rate of between 4 to 6% for the graphs under study appeared in quantitative articles during this time period. Author examples are provided to introduce, or re-acquaint, researchers, students, and practitioners with several of the merits of graphing and the inferences that may be derived from graphing a study's data and/or findings. As well, published examples from the JCSD of quantitative articles that employ good graphing practices are discussed.
