It Saved My Life--Well, My Lesson!
Price, Samantha
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n198 p16-17 Sept 2006
In this article, the author describes a resource she made to teach Y2 children about fractions. Her resource was designed to act as a visual aid that would reinforce the children's knowledge and understanding of what a fraction was. It would visually demonstrate how many halves and quarters are in one whole, how many quarters are in a half and emphasise the fact that even though the fractions are smaller than a whole one, if you put them all together (ie, two halves or four quarters) they are equal in size. "Design and make a mathematical resource to promote children's learning" was the task set as part of her maths assignment for her first year. The author also discusses her experiences during the first year of teaching.
