Bridge the Digital Divide for Educational Equity
Mason, Christine Y.; Dodds, Richard
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n9 p25-27 May 2005
Students' technological savvy has challenged schools to make greater use of computers and the Internet in their curricula, but unfortunately, not every student has the same access to it, and the inability to keep pace has created a digital divide that continues to widen. The digital divide particularly affects students who are black, Hispanic, Native American, and poor. This article discusses some insights into the possibilities of future technology that can be gained by examining five recent innovations likely to impact elementary schools in the next five to ten years: (1) wireless networks; (2) electronic portfolios; (3) portable technologies; (4) attractive technologies; and (5) virtual schools.
