Nurturing Teachers in the Famine of NCLB
Million, June
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n9 p16-18 May 2005
While the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, President Bush's reauthorization of President Lyndon Johnson's Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, is not a cause for daily unhappiness, it is still capable of taking its toll on staff morale. Teachers are working harder than they have ever worked in the past, yet even as they see their students making progress; it's very possible that their school is not reaching Adequate Yearly Progress under NCLB. In this article, the author emphasizes some insights for school principals to consider when there is a point the staff needs a boost in their morale. As strong and resourceful leaders, school principals shall develop a variety of ways to which it is possible for them to keep staff morale high in the toughest of times.
