Helping Students through Depression
Vail, Kathleen
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n8 p36-42 Apr 2005
Data from the federal Center for Mental Health Services indicate that one in every 33 children and one in eight adolescents may be suffering from depression. Up to 70% of children with diagnosable mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders are not receiving mental health services, according to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health. Within that scope of disorders, depressed children are the least likely to get treatment. For schools already burdened by requirements and struggling to raise student achievement, dealing with mental health might seem to be piling things on. This article, condensed from "American School Board Journal" (Mar 2005) discusses the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and its recommendations to improve and expand school mental health programs.
