Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n6 p62-66 Feb 2005
In this article, the author deals with a screenplay adaptation assignment that he gave to his students. The purpose is to make readers out of some students who don't like to read, and to teach them something about film as an art form. He starts with a film entitled, "Ernest Hemingway's Soldier's Home." He used it because of the technical difficulties it gives a screenwriter. He also used another film entitled, "About Schmidt." He chose this film because of a clever device used to reveal Schmidt's inner nature. Schmidt is an empty husk of a man who eventually comes to face the meaninglessness of his life. Here, he presents an example of the screenwriting assignment he gave them. He gave another assignment, wherein he asked his students to make a list of all the differences that they can think of between the novel, entitled "The Godfather" and the two films. Among other things, he discusses the two things he has learned from the assignments.
