A teacher's attitude--whether good or bad--trickles down to the students. According to Tom Carroll, who serves in the capacity of president of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future, there is no teacher shortage but a horrendous turnover and attrition problem. Teachers who are leaving are constantly being replaced. The conditions that teachers say are driving them out of school needs to be changed. There has been little research which has been published with regard to the link between teacher morale and student achievement; the two major studies, one from the United States and one from Britain, were released decades ago. In spite of this, however, common sense tells that supported and contented teachers will do a better job of teaching than their dissatisfied colleagues. There are some things with regard to teacher morale which one can control, but there are others which one cannot control. Much of the responsibility for this lies with the building leader, but changes can be made at the district level, too. This article presents 10 things which one can do in order to make one's schools great places to work.
