Finding the Way for Getting to Wellness
Buchanan, Bruce
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n3 p35-40 Nov 2005
Faced with child obesity rates that have reached record highs, schools across America will soon go on a fitness plan prescribed by Congress. The wellness mandate requires districts that participate in the federal school lunch program to have a policy in place by the start of the 2006-2007 school year. The law is not nearly as far-reaching as the No Child Left Behind Act and does not carry the weight of federal sanctions. Supporters and community activists hope that forcing school districts to confront student health issues will bring about reforms, just as increased federal scrutiny under NCLB has led to greater emphasis on reading and math. The author provides more details on how this wellness programs are being integrated in schools.
