Schools strive to educate fully every child who walks through their doors. Yet many schools find themselves burdened with large numbers of struggling learners who have not yet acquired the necessary foundation skills that are required in order for them to be able to master the curriculum successfully. Here, the author discusses the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a "big idea" that underlie intervention strategies. The author presents several principles as well as a set of intervention ideas that can help instructional leaders remove barriers to learning for at-risk students.
