Is Your Physical Education Program Ready to Combat Obesity?
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n5 p20 May-Jun 2004
According to a survey by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, over 76% of parents concerned about the escalating childhood obesity rates and the rise of Type II diabetes, see daily physical activity as key to optima health and academic success. Physical education program should help students develop health-related fitness, motor skills, and knowledge to help them adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles. To be able to meet this goal, NASPE urges principals, teachers and parents to conduct a self-study of their school's physical education program--evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and then encourage a plan for improvement where needed. Ten questions to ask in the evaluation are presented.
