Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n9 p44-47 May 2004
Listening to the old commencement bromides, one cannot help having the nagging sense that things are not the way they used to be. Something has changed, and while one may not know exactly what it is, it does not feel good. In this article, the author discusses the condition of America's manufacturing jobs and other technological changes vis-a-vis the growing numbers of graduates joining the workforce. Thus, it appears that the graduating class has a rough ride for the foreseeable future. There is still great work in America, but the work some have planned to do is now being done elsewhere. This means one still has more homework to do--stay informed and find leaders who can see systemic changes that will protect individual jobs. That is the work one has to do today to protect the work he or she hopes to do tomorrow.
