This study is an exploration of the art produced by American veterans of the Vietnam War. In the areas of artistic history, military service, and the creative process, Vietnam veteran artists are a diverse group, and there are many different ways of explaining the connection between Vietnam experience and their art. Some individuals made limited use of Vietnam as a subject, while others see it as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. For all the differences among them, the significant unifying aspect is that, to whatever degree, all have used art to record, react, or reflect on what they experienced in the Vietnam War. The primary importance of this study for art education is that it reminds us of the powerful connection between lived experience and the production of art. These individuals did not just hear or read about the Vietnam War, they participated in it. The totality of experience provides a foundation for work that is resonant and meaningful.
