Stroking Stressed-Out Teachers
Black, Susan
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n5 p28-32 Jan 2004
Stress seems to be a way of life for teachers. Many teachers describe themselves as over-whelmed. They admit to feeling anxious and apprehensive, especially about meeting the mounting needs of troubled students, doing justice to an all-consuming curriculum, and getting kids ready for a relentless series of tests. According to a study of Midwestern teachers by Minnesota-based Optum Research, about 40% of respondents reported high levels of job stress and said it mostly affected their personal and family life. Job stress also affected the teachers' physical health, job performance, and mental health, and their students' academic achievement. Taking steps to reduce occupational stress can be good for students and teachers alike. This article presents several tips for teachers in coping with stress which the National Education Association's Stress Reduction Guide has posted on its online Health Information Network. These include creating a school climate that values teachers and their work, making sure the school and surrounding areas are safe, and making sure teachers have reasonable workloads and adequate breaks among other things.
