Nurturing Aesthetic Awareness in Young Children: Developmentally Appropriate Art Viewing Experiences
Danko-McGhee, Katherina
Art Education, v59 n3 p20-24, 33-35 May 2006
Teaching young children ways to appreciate art is not the daunting task that it appears to be. At a very young age, children are quite capable of having an aesthetic experience on their own terms, whether it be the delight of mixing different textured foods on the high chair table top or becoming visually engaged with a mobile that is suspended over the crib. Without realizing it, young children are afforded many opportunities to engage in an aesthetic experience. Research suggests that adults who encourage children to talk about art objects, who the artists are and how the objects are made, generates children's interest in making art and nurtures their art language development. The focus of this article is how to put these ideas into action. The author begins by discussing the nature of aesthetics and the young child. This discussion is followed by suggestions of how early childhood art educators can provide more meaningful experiences for young children as they view works of art. Three learning centers are presented that focus on artworks found to be of interest to young children at the Toledo Museum of Art, where developmentally appropriate art appreciation and studio activities were developed to help extend a young child's understanding of artworks.
