Reaching Unmotivated Students
Berliner, Beth Ann
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v69 n5 p46-47 Jan 2004
Understanding student motivation, why it breaks down, and how it can be supported or enhanced, is critical to good teaching. Following recent research discoveries, eagerness to learn is now viewed as an inherent capacity in all students when they have a positive view of themselves and a supportive learning environment. In this brief article, the author offers several suggestions for engaging motivated students and turning them into interested, confident, higher-achieving students. These include creating positive learning environments and classrooms that are caring, orderly, collegial, and accepting of many viewpoints.
