The Museum-University Connection: Partners in Early Childhood Art Experiences
Danko-McGhee, Katherina
Art Education, v57 n6 p35-40 Nov 2004
Reflective and collaborative learning can help teachers to better understand their students. Preservice teachers are busy managing initial experiences and often do not have the time nor the depth of experience from which to reflect more on the art of teaching. The University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, provides such an opportunity for early childhood and art education majors to reflect on their practice. In this article, the author describes the collaboration between The Toledo Museum of Art Family Center and the University of Toledo Art Department and the development of the Children's Art Workshop. Through this university-museum partnership, with the reciprocal goal of providing a variety of developmentally appropriate art experiences for young children, university students explore the unknown territory which becomes of great benefit to them as future teachers of young children.
