Creating Public Art through Intergenerational Collaboration
Alexenberg, Mel; Benjamin, Miriam
Art Education, v57 n5 p13-18 Sep 2004
In this article, the authors describe an exemplary model of postmodern art education--the collaboration of young people and elders in the creation of monumental works of public art. Through aesthetic dialogue, young people and elders from the Hispanic, African-American, and Jewish communities of Miami transformed valued traditions into artistic statements of enduring significance. Together, their young and old hands shaped wet clay into colorful ceramic relief elements collaged onto three towering thrones constructed of steel, aluminum, and concrete. The 20-foot high, 2-ton "Legacy Thrones" visually convey the stories of the three largest ethnic communities of elders in Miami. The thrones are installed at the shoreline facing Biscayne Bay near Miami's new performing arts center. (Contains 5 notes.)
