A Response to Elizabeth Gould, "Nomadic Turns: Epistemology, Experience, and Women University Band Directors"
Koza, Julia, Eklund
Philosophy of Music Education Review, v13 n2 p187-195 Fall 2005
In this response to Gould, the author has two goals: first, to forward another, not necessarily competing, postmodern understanding of feminism and power; and second, to expand Gould's project of examining professional climate. Koza defines feminism as a constellation of dynamic political positions that address and attempt to change the unequal power relations and material conditions that are produced and supported by a normative regulatory ideal called sex. She describes her work as a feminist academic as twofold: first, to bring into wider circulation the recognition that materializations of the body are the effects of power and that sex and sexual difference are cultural norms; and second, to address the damaging effects creating by this regulatory ideal. One of these damaging effects is suffering, and one of the spaces of suffering for women is instrumental music education. The author concludes by calling for an acceleration in the rate of change in collective disidentification and for complex and extended visions of professionalism that allow for more variety, balance, and texture.
