"We Are Clinicians Committed to Cultural Diversity and Social Justice": Good Intentions that Can Wane Over Time
Parra-Cardona, Jose Ruben; Holtrop, Kendal; Cordova, David
Guidance & Counselling, v21 n1 p36-46 Fall 2005
Despite the importance given to issues of social justice and training in cultural competence in the counselling field, little attention has been given to the fact that counsellors' commitment to issues of cultural diversity and cultural competence can erode over time. In this article, we propose that relying exclusively on training in cultural competence is not enough for counsellors to remain committed to issues of social justice and cultural competence in clinical practice. By reflecting on existing literature and our own clinical experiences, we propose that the pursuit of cultural competence is facilitated through a permanent process of reflexivity and mutual accountability within supporting and constructive environments.
