The Relationship between Learning Disabilities and Homelessness in Adults
Markos, Patricia A.; Strawser, Sherri
Guidance & Counselling, v19 n2 p46-56 Win 2004
This article describes the relationship between learning disabilities (LD) and homelessness. Research describing the connection between disabilities and homelessness has focused on individuals presenting with disabilities such as mental illness, physical disabilities, medical disabilities, or substance abuse. At this time, the presence of LD in the population of adults who are homeless has not been adequately researched. This article presents the definitions of homelessness and learning disabilities, reviews the characteristics of and causative factors for both groups, describes the interrelated nature of LD and homelessness, and presents recommendations for research and intervention with these populations. (Contains 2 tables.)
