Using Internet Assessment Tools for Health and Physical Education Instruction
Thornburg, Roland; Hill, Kory
TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning, v48 n6 p53-55, 70 2004
The issue of obesity and overweight adolescents has saturated media reports and newspapers as of late. Schools offer a unique environment to make an impact in the area of fitness in that they can develop health-related activity and assessment programs designed to promote proper physical activity and assess the changes in children (Koplan et al., 1989). Physical education programs have been developed that place a greater emphasis on health-related physical activities and more class time for actual fitness participation. The next step is to be accountable and take action. Making students accountable for their own nutritional and physical activity habits may assist in changing behaviors. This paper discusses one creative way to address these determinants in improving the health of the public by enhancing the use of the Internet for health information. It has been found that using Internet assessment tools for health-related fitness allows students to interact with the content and apply their knowledge to authentic tasks. The intent of the study reported here was to determine whether or not middle school students were motivated by the use of technology in physical education. There was also a desire to determine the effectiveness of the web-based learning project with regard to nutrition and physical activity content.
